PHYTO PRODUCTS : FAQ

What is a plant protection product (PPP) ?

This term refers specifically to the use of plant pesticides ( agricultural and non-agricultural , as in gardens or parks of Commons) . There are mainly three categories: herbicides ( against weeds ), fungicides ( to fight against fungi ) and insecticides ( to fight against insects) . Other products have an effect on rodents ( rodenticides ) , on snails and slugs ( molluscicides ) . According to the definition given in Article L.253 -1 of the Rural Code , they also include products containing GMOs whose function is to destroy unwanted species.

What is AMA ?

The Authorisation Marketing Authorisation (AMA) is the agreement of a rights holder to operate a commercial specialty plant protection industrially manufactured for him to sell . All plant protection product must be distributed under a No. AMM , it must appear on the product label.

All marketing authorizations granted in France are listed on the site http://e-phy.agriculture.gouv.fr/

What is MSDS ?

Data Sheet Safety is a form containing data regarding the properties of a chemical .

These cards are an important part of health and safety for users of the products and for those who treat their remains, residues, or waste contaminated by the toxic and / or dangerous but also for caregivers , informing staff of emergency (including poison centers ) on the risks associated with these products and how to reduce them. These sheets are used for cataloging information on chemicals.

We should be able to find anywhere a substance used . In Europe , they must be distributed by the particular manufacturer or distributor of the product to the customer and in the language of the latter.

What are the risks associated with the use of PPP?

Humans :

Plant protection products are known to scientists since the 60s for their pollution on human health . Exposure increases the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, blood diseases and reproductive disorders and several types of cancers ( gliomas, sarcomas, prostate cancer , etc. . ) . These risks are set by risk phrases on labels for these products :

ü  R 22 Harmful if swallowed

ü  R 26 Very toxic by inhalation

ü  R 29 Contact with water liberates toxic gas

ü  R 34 Causes burns

ü  R 38 Irritating to skin

ü  R 40 carcinogenic effect : Limited evidence

ü  R 45 May cause cancer

ü  R 46 May cause heritable genetic damage

ü  R 60 May impair fertility

ü  R 62 Possible risk of impaired fertility

ü  R 64 May cause harm to breastfed babies

On the environment :

The risks to the environment are diverse, they are set by risk phrases which must be placed on the labels of the products concerned :

ü  R 50 Very toxic to aquatic organisms

ü  R 51 Toxic to aquatic organisms

ü  R 52 Nocif pour les organismes aquatiques

ü  R 54 Toxic to flora

ü  R 55 Toxic to fauna

ü  R 57 Toxic to bees

ü  R 59 Dangerous for the ozone layer

To reduce the risk , it is appropriate to limit the application of these products ( other so-called "organic" solutions may exist, see " Control Alternative ") and to protect themselves appropriately (see " PPE: Protective Equipment individual ").

Are there more or less harmful PPP  ?

PPPs are classified by level of risk , the pictograms on the labels of products give you an indication of the type of hazard associated with its use (see sheet " Phyto Best Practices ").

The mention EAJ (Employment Authorized in Garden ) guarantees a lower level of dangerousness.

What types of PPP can I use for my garden ?

According to the Decree of 6 October 2004 on the conditions for authorization and use of the term " permitted use in the gardens " for plant protection products as amended by Decree of 26 July 2005, specialties benefiting from the reference " Allowed in Gardens ( EAJ ) Employment " are the only products that can be sold to non-professional people ( gardeners ) and used by them because they have guarantees less dangerous.

What are the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) and pre-harvest interval (PHI )

MRLs are the maximum regulatory concentrations of active substances which should not be exceeded in foodstuffs . They are defined in the toxicological studies for obtaining the MA.

Observe the use of a product defined by the WMA, particularly with regard to the pre-harvest interval (PHI ) can not exceed the MRL of this product. DAR is the time required for the degradation of the plant protection product after treatment that must be met before harvest . If no DAR is indicated on the label DAR is then 3 days.

Observe the label ..!
